Whats this all about then?
We’ll be competing in the Summer 2008 Rickshaw Run, an adventure that will take us 2000 miles down the length of India, all in the name of charity. After surviving the party the night before and altitude sickness in the giddy heights of Kathmandu, Nepal , we’ll venture southwards through the humid jungle and foothills of the Himalayas and down into the very heart of rural India, over arid plains and other stuff we cant imagine and finish on the tropical beaches of the southernmost tip of the subcontinent.
And how will we achieve such a feat? No, not in a perfectly-suited 4 wheel drive with a support crew on hand every step of the way. Instead we’ll be throwing away all traces of comfort and reliability and tackling the might of India in a 3-wheeled, 145cc, 7hp Auto Rickshaw – probably the most unsuitable vehicle imaginable, after a lawnmower. We’ve just got to hope we’re not too far from civilization when the inevitable breakdowns occur.
During this trip we’ll pitting ourselves, man and machine, against absolutely everything that India can throw at us, and all going well, we’ll sucessfully conquer substandard roads, horrendous driving, numerous breakdowns, (hopefully not so numerous) crashes and avoid a host of tropical diseases to return home two weeks later, having raised stacks of money for charity.
The Rickshaw Run is organised by The League of Adventurists. Visit the Rickshaw Run website for more details of the event.
