The Charities

So, this is the main reason why we are here isnt it? See the video below that shows our visit to the water treatment plant in southern india.

Each member of Team Midlifecrisis has a strong belief that there are certain things that all people should be able to count on in order just to survive. Regardless of who they are, or where they are every single person should be able to have a few basics such as water to drink, tools to be able to plant and grow food and vital medical support when needed.

These things are not a lot for anyone to ask for, yet we all know from watching news reports and reading the papers that even these very basics needs are not possible for everyone. Surely it falls to those that are more fortunate, such as you and me to give a little back to even the odds a little.

However, all the team members want to ensure that all efforts made by us and all fiancial support given by donators is used to its full potential, and no funds are wasted by charity admin, or by us by doing the event itself.

We have taken great care in checking the charities supported by the Rickshaw Run , and are proud to support both Mercy Corps and the Frank water project.

We would like to take the time to give you a few more details on what we are asking you guys to donate to by supporting us.

Mercy Corps www.mercycorps.org.uk/

Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.

Mercy Corps works amid disasters, conflicts, chronic poverty and instability to unleash the potential of people who can win against nearly impossible odds. Since 1979, Mercy Corps has provided £600 million in assistance to people in 100 nations. Supported by headquarters offices in North America, Europe and Asia, the agency’s unified global programmes employ 3,400 staff worldwide and reach nearly 14.4 million people in more than 35 countries.
Mercy Corps has learned that communities recovering from war or social upheaval must be the agents of their own transformation for change to endure. It’s only when communities set their own agendas, raise their own resources and implement programmes themselves, that their first successes result in the renewed hope, confidence and skills to continue development.
We believe in the intrinsic value and dignity of human life.We are awed by human resilience, and believe in the ability of all people to thrive, not just exist. Our spiritual and humanitarian values compel us to act.We believe that all people have the right to live in peaceful communities and participate fully in the decisions that affect their lives. We believe that human imagination and energy can inspire innovative solutions to any problem, no matter how intractable.

We believe that it is our duty to be effective stewards of the financial resources entrusted to us.

Emergency relief services that assist people afflicted by conflict or disaster.
Sustainable economic development that integrates agriculture, health, housing and infrastructure, economic development, education and environment, and local management.
Civil society initiatives that promote citizen participation, accountability, conflict management and the rule of law.
All over the world, millions of innocent people are caught up in intolerable situations. But they are not today’s victims; they are tomorrow’s heroes, who have the power to transform their own communities. The agency is currently involved in these geographic and programmatic areas:

FRANK water project www.frankwater.com

FRANK has funded the installation of 4 clean water projects in Andhra Pradesh, India. An additional 4 more projects are currently under development- benefitting 48 000 people to date. Each project costs £6,700 and provides clean, safe drinking water for up to 6,000 people in the surrounding communities. FRANK Water staff make annual, self funded visits to the villages and meet with our partners to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the projects.

Sustainable, Community Run Projects.

FRANK works closely with Naandi (www.naandi.org), a local Indian NGO, to identify communities that require clean water facilities. Naandi commits to work in every village that has a facility on all related water issues, including agricultural practices, irrigation, sanitation etc.

Once a project is set up, it is owned, run and maintained by the local community, with WHI and Naandi on hand providing support. Local operators (from that specific village) are trained to operate and maintain the facility.

Villagers pay 1 rupee for every 15 litres of safe drinking water. This price is set by Naandi and is affordable (est. 50p per year per person for drinking water). The 1 Rupee is split into thirds; one third goes towards the operators salaries, the second third towards filters and parts, whilst the last third is reinvested into the community.

FRANK currently works with selected project partners:

water health WaterHealth International (WHI) handles construction, system installation and training local operators. Ashok Gadgil of WHI invented a new award-winning ultraviolet technology. It is a compact, low maintenance device that uses ultra violet light to disinfect drinking water efficiently and economically. www.waterhealth.com
Naandi Naandi, a local Indian NGO, runs education, outreach and community capacity building projects. WHI is working with Naandi to identify communities that will benefit from the new technology via our funding. www.naandi.org

We hope to start funding the installation of these projects in Ghana, Africa as well as in India in 2008.
